Connie Han Trio at Catalina Jazz Club in Los Angeles, CA

Pianist and provocateur Connie Han has created an edgy blend of modern and traditional jazz with her incendiary Mack Avenue Records debut CRIME ZONE.

According to Downbeat Magazine, Han (aged 22) has already “absorbed the post-bop piano masters" with “all the technical mastery she’ll ever need.” Influenced by post-bop masters Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, and Kenny Kirkland, Han brings a fire, passion, and maturity that belies her youth. All About Jazz states, “With this album she’s booking a place as a star in the jazz firmament of tomorrow. Watch out for Connie Han, the face (and shape) of jazz to come.”

Connie Han Trio | Thursday, October 18, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Next generation Los Angeles pianist Connie Han will celebrate the release of Crime Zone, her debut album for Mack Avenue Records. Han, who began her professional piano career at 17 year-old, performs an edgy blend of modern and traditional jazz. “Because I never received training from a formal jazz piano teacher, most of my musical perspective actually came from interacting with a professional drummer when I was just a youngling, trying to hang on for dear life,” she says. “I think that experience has given me a unique edge which informs the heavily percussive elements of my playing.”

The Lagniappe program furthers its mission of introducing students to New Orleans culture with Jazz at the Rat, a series of concerts held in City Diner (aka Der Rathskeller or The Rat), on the garden level of the Lavin-Bernick Center (LBC). Hosted and curated by jazz pianist and Newcomb Department of Music instructor Jesse McBride, each live performance features accomplished New Orleans musicians, jazz legends, and visiting artists, accompanied by students and faculty from Tulane's Jazz Studies program. All concerts are free and open to the public.

From the Montreal Jazz Festival website: "In her early twenties, California pianist Connie Han already boasts an incredible musical maturity. She takes the stage accompanied by Edwin Livingston (bass) and Bill Wysaske (drums). An afternoon of virtuosity."
